God and the Virginia Tech Tragedy
What Does it Teach us about God and Ourselves?

DOES GOD EXIST? has done several lectureships on the campus of Virginia Tech University; the most recent in 2005. This makes me feel especially close to this disaster.

It is obvious now that the killer was a man who gave numerous signs that he needed help, and no one gave him the help he needed. Our secular society has thrown up so many legal barriers, and psychological help has become such a cosmetic thing, that when a really sick person is recognized, no one is able or willing to help.  In this case several people tried, and the system defeated them.

God has given us, as a people, the resources to help those who have mental problems no matter what the cause of those problems. But for many reasons we often fail to give that help.  As people look into the history of this unfortunate young man I am sure they will see a story of missed opportunities to help him.  God provides us with the tools to deal with all kinds of illnesses and problems on this Earth, but He doesn't force solutions upon us.  When we fail to use what God has given us, when we squander opportunities and resources -- when we don’t care -- the result is always pain and misery for all concerned. Sometimes innocent bystanders are terribly injured or killed in the process.

Virginia Tech is no argument for atheism. It is a challenge for our culture to look at what we are doing to reach out to the unfortunate ones among us who have mental problems.  Survival of the fittest is no answer for human beings created in the image of God. The answer is the love and care and compassion of Jesus Christ. The tragedy of Virginia Tech does not prove there is no God. It just shows how far we have fallen short of serving Him and those who were created in His image. - John N. Clayton
